With the World Cup underway, fans will be enjoying their favourite teams’ performances in the stadiums across the world, but for Belgian and European volunteer network SOS Chemicals, there is one match being played out in a stadium in Belgium: the fight against the use of aldicarb (also known as Aldicarb sulfoxide, dimethyl carbamate, (R)-(-)-α-[[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]oxiran-2-yl]acetonitrile) and the toxic effects it can cause.
Lianne Vérian, volunteer of SOS Chemicals Liège, reported about aldicarb: “I first came across the name of aldicarb when I contacted the Belgian Poison Control Centre. Belgium is one of the countries most affected by aldicarb poisoning. The EC wants to limit the use of aldicarb, and in order to help, SOS Chemicals volunteers have taken up the cause to educate people about its effects and to reduce the amount of aldicarb used in the country.
